How Do I Port Forward My Router And Still Remain The Security Within My Home Network?

July 12th, 2009 admin 1 comment

Hello,
I am a 16 year-old wishing to expand on my internet tests, experiments and such… I currently went as far as 3 websites, played with visual studio, and now I wish to run a server accessable though our internet ip, but I would require to portforward and my dad and I would like to keep the security over our private network… I would very much appreciate a link to a free anti-hacker program or whatever I must aquire to keep high-end security and still run a server… the server will be hosted on a computer that I plan to dedicate to only running the server, but we have atleast 6 other computers using our internet, and we cannot afford to have any of them hacked or get a virus from this project I intend to do, so please help as much as you can.
I greatly appreciate it, and I hope that after my 8-9 years of learning all about the computer gets to pass this point within the year, and expand into more advanced server testing such as learning how to run servers on various ports…

Is Windows Xp Good For A Home Network With Shared External Hard Drives?

June 23rd, 2009 admin 1 comment

I have setup one of my computers to be dedicated to host all of my external hard drives at home. I find that the transfer rate suffers greatly (from 2 times to 10 times slower than being directly connected to the computer needing the files). All hard drives are usb external.
I was wondering if a WRTSL54GS storage router with USB hard drive sharing could be faster for data access on a home network than going through a winXP computer?
Would linux work well enough to dispurse the data faster? Something like Ubuntu server edition or something? How does linux work with other windows os based computers on a small home network?
All I need in the end is to have a place where all my ext. drives are connected and accessible with good transfer rates from other computers.
Thanks.

Network Of Dedicated Servers?

June 13th, 2009 admin 5 comments

I am looking for a number of servers (say 40 dedicated machines) each with their own IP, not in the same IP address range, spread around the world. It can be Linux of windows PCs. Does anyone know of a good solution or service for this? I have looked into EC2 from Amazon but they do not have the support I need. Ideas?
Note: I am not looking for caching services or exclusively web hosting. The machines should have different external IPs, possibly different locations and also be able to run desktop windows applications.
