Can anyone give me a little know-how about starting up a website? Perhaps some step-by-step about how to go from knowing nothing about this, to running a website? I think alot of people would benefit from this information besides just myself. I need to know some of the steps that I need to take to register a domain name, and how to host it. Some of the terms I’ve heard associated with this were MySQL and cPanel (I think). Does anyone know what these terms mean? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot!

I’d like to offer my clients web space to go with their web page as a way to raise a little more money for myself and to be able to pay off my yearly bill. Is this legal?
Why should I wake up in the morning? Why should I talk to people? Why should I bother doing anything? I don’t get it.
I always wondered why people seem so content with the crap that goes on. How can a man be so happy with a job in an office, where he works away and dedicates his waking life to some stupid corporate project? How can a woman be happy slaving away as a mother to ungrateful brats who will grow up and throw her into a nursing home? How can kids in school work and work at stupid crap like clubs and sports, and fill up their time with student council and studying, trying to get into colleges that will just overcharge them for their education and throw them into eternal debt, while they try their damndest to be able to buy groceries with a paycheck that could be beaten by McDonald’s without a degree?
I don’t get it. I ponder. I wonder. There has to be something more.
I feel like a rodent in a cage. Here I am, sitting at my computer, playing games. Oh, nice, a new item! Excellent! In fact, I was just playing World of Warcraft, and a guildmate just got a rare item in that game. Everyone in guild chat made a big announcement about it like they just gave birth or something. Why? It’s a game. It’s designed to keep you fat and happy, and to make you docile, to suck your money out of your pocket.
So what if I wasn’t docile? What if I didn’t have all of today’s newest trends, fashions, health foods, and cars to keep me fat and happy? Then what? What would I do? I don’t know. Life would be just as pointless. I’d live a terribly boring life. So I wonder - on one hand, you have this incredibly stupid existence, surrounded by consumerism, materialism, fake food that is full of artifical crap and chemical crap that humans were, quite frankly, never meant to mess with - and on the other, you have this boring, harsh existence without any of that. Where is the balance? I can’t seem to find it. I don’t even know why I wake up in the morning.
People are rot. They are organisms that are not to be trusted. They do everything for themselves, and nothing for others - nothing unless they have some sort of benefit to gain from it. The ONLY REASON you can go to the store and buy pre-packaged food products that are conveniant and tasty to you, is because some asshole decided it would be a good way to make money. They don’t give two shits worth a damn about your convenience or your life. If they could make money off of selling decapitated infants to cannibals in South America, they would. And if it made more money than pleasing your fat ***, they would focus on that.
So I go back to my original question. Why? Why. What is the point? Because I don’t see one. I see misery, I see selfishness, I see hamsters in a huge cage, running in a wheel, oblivious to everything outside of their meaningless little world, full of NFL, NASCAR, Diet Coke, Burger King, Oscar-Meyer precooked bacon (it’s easy and convenient!), Ford Explorers, Gucci, and a host of other crap that makes them think they are what they are not - but we’ve all been raised to think that we’re all going to be big, rich hip-hop stars one day, to be featured on MTV Cribs or on some reality show.
I hope the planet burns.

I just started with a Virtual-Dedicated Server yesterday, created my cpanel account, created my ftp account, logged in, and uploaded some files to my public_html directory. However, when I try viewing anything I’ve uploaded (by going to http://server-ip/file_name in a browser), I get a “Not found” error! My FTP program says the files are there, and cpanel’s file-manager says they’re there, but my browser can’t view them! Any suggestions on what I’m doing wrong?
My index page is still the default cpanel-place-holder page, even though I uploaded a new index.html. My domain name hasn’t been changed yet to the new server, so I’m trying to view my site by typing in its IP address into the browser, rather than its domain name.
Additionally if it helps, cpanel said:
“The hostname (box.my-domain.com) resolves to . It should resolve to “my-ip”. Please be sure to correct /etc/hosts as well as the ‘A’ entry in zone file for the domain.”
Thanks for reading my question.
So how come there’s a whole host of new sites dedicated to hijabfashionistas??? Don’t get it. It says how to make heads turn. Surely if you want to attract attention then take it off, arrange your hair in a nice style and go out. Why should women have to/want to cover their hair anyway? It seems unfair. Why should women have to cover up?
I looked on google about dedicated servers, and all I get is advertisements for purchasing one.
I wan’t to know how this works though. First - is it a monthly fee? Or do I host it forever? And what does it enable? Do i get a big box which amplifies the internet and makes a game server out of it? Do they send me a copy of all of the game’s files, then i run them into a program and Host it? How would someone connect to my server?
Sorry to the Answerers, this just comes as a big confusion to me.
All Answers are appreciated.
~Thanks.
I am currently with godaddy on their economy shared hosting plan.
The problem is I have no idea how popular the site is going to be. It is a UK based site dealing with Gold Panning - goldpanningsuppliesdotcodotuk. I think if there is some mention of Gold Panning on the television there may be 400 hits in a day, but most of the time probably around 20. But I have no real way of knowing until a spike hits. I am going to announce its launch on a very popular gold panning forum, so would like to be prepared for about 200 hits on the first day. That may be way optimistic but I would hate if the site crashed and lost all that good will.
If you look at the site you can see there are two embedded youtube videos. If you click twice I assume the viewer is consuming youtube bandwidth, but if just once am I right in assuming this would consume my bandwidth?
Say there would be a max of 20 people watching these videos simultaneously. Would the economy virtual dedicated server be capable of handling this? I would like to try this for the first month, or maybe until the first TV article induced peak. And then scale back if the estimates were over optimistic.
Would a godaddy VDS be capable of handling this.
Question 2) Can you check out the site and tell me if the current download time is acceptable. Particularly when you click gold equipment. And then Gold Pans. Is it just my imagination or is it very slow? Would moving from the economy shared host to the premium shared host speed things up? Would moving to a VDS speed things up.
You can probably see I am all over the place. Trying to understand how different hosting plans can deal with numbers of simultaneous hits/effect on speed/how to calculate bandwidth used per hit etc.
If you were using the estimated figures I have provided which plan would you go for.
I have to eplain the reasoning to my cousin whos site it is, so much detail would be appreciated. Please dont advise me to move from godaddy as I have found this stressful enough as it is. Migrating host 1 month before launch and losing the yearly subscription would freak me out!
I know Godaddy is good, but I’m researching alternatives in terms of price, disk/bandwidth, and services. I don’t need any of the typical e-commerce stuff…just a good overall package. Also, the availability of dedicated server packages with the availability of admin access is also good.
